A New Model for Addressing London's Housing Need

04 June 2009

Just Space recently hosted 'London Housing Strategy Consultation: A New Model for Addressing London's Housing Need- on 4 June 2009. This event was held in partnership with London Tenants Federation, Shelter, Planning Aid for London, and London Civic Forum's Your Voice Your City programme, and included workshops and panels on 'London's Housing Need', 'A Definition of Affordability', 'Our Homes, Our Communities' and 'The Estate Experience'.

Housing is one of the biggest concerns to Londoners. The Greater London Authority Act 2007 gave the Mayor responsibility for producing a London Housing Strategy and to consult with Londoners on its content. That consultation is taking place now and ends on 31 August 2009 (read more here).

The Mayor's vision informs the strategy. It aims to:

  • raise aspirations and promote opportunity by producing more affordable homes, particularly for families, and by increasing opportunities for home ownership through the new First Steps housing programme.
  • improve homes and transform neighbourhoods by improving design quality, greening homes, targeting and delivering regeneration and tackling empty homes.
  • maximise delivery and optimise value for money by creating a new architecture for delivery, developing new investment models and promoting new delivery mechanisms.
