Infrastructure support needed by community groups across London

Report commissioned by the Neighbourhoods sub group of the London Regional ChangeUp Consortium, written by Dorothy Newton.

The report shows that community groups have support needs that are not being met by traditional approaches from government, funders and the larger voluntary sector, a huge challenge for the ambitions of the Big Society.

Almost 90% of the so-called Voluntary and Community Sector is made up of community groups.  They are the backbone and building blocks of a democratic society. These frontline voluntary and community organisations should be able to access support which is effective, accessible, sustainably funded, available nationwide and that reflects and promotes diversity. The report estimated that each London Borough has on average 2,000 voluntary and community organisations, of which at least 1,600 were community groups – in London, therefore, we have over 50,000 community groups whose needs are significantly unmet.
