What is this project about?
Growing London enables 60 Londoners to develop new confidence, skills and knowledge to lead positive change in their communities and across London.
In five London neighbourhoods groups of 12-15 local people can come together & learn how to make a difference in their communities by participating in this container growing project. During the course of the sessions participants will learn about:
- Creating a container garden – help will be given with seeds and tools
- Learning how to plan and look after plants, ready to plant up in the Spring
- Linking the gardening project into other things going on locally and across London
- Building skills, confidence and knowledge to make a difference in their local area
Participants will get a chance to share what they have learnt with other neighbourhoods across London.
How will it work?
Experts from Ecolocal will support learners in planning, locating and growing a new mini-food garden from seed. Alongside this, they will take part in group sessions with a trained tutor from the WEA about how to make a difference in their community – at local and London-wide levels. There will be five 2-hour growing sessions and five 2 hour active citizenship group learning sessions between October 2011 and March 2012. All sessions will take place in local neighbourhoods apart from two visits to central London.
Learner Commitment
Participants will need to be able to sign up for all 10 sessions from Oct—March. The dates and times of the sessions will be agreed in advance. Learners will receive a certificate of involvement at the end of the course. Reasonable expense for any access or childcare costs can be provided.
This project is funded by the Skills Funding Agency.
